Districtwide Assessments

A variety of assessments occur within our classrooms to measure how students are doing. Assessments include frequent monitoring, observations, quizzes, projects, demonstrations and tests.

In addition to class and course assessments, there are a number of assessments that are administered district-wide:

  • CAP:  Kindergarten students take the Concepts About Print (CAP) test in October, February, and June. This observation instrument measures students' readiness for reading by assessing their understanding of book orientation, directionality, and concepts of letters, words, and punctuation.  
  • Fountas and Pinnell:  This reading assessment is individually administered to students in grades kindergarten through six in October, February and June.  It helps teachers determine students' independent and instructional reading levels and identifies the skill each student is ready to learn next.
  • MAP Growth Assessments:  Students in grades 1-10 are administered the reading and math tests online three times per year; kindergarten students also take the assessments in winter and spring.  These are norm referenced assessments that compare the performance of each student to other students at the same grade level nationally.  The assessment reports specify the skills  students have mastered and indicate the next set of skills each student is ready to learn.  
  • Smarter Balanced Assessments: Connecticut students in grades 3-8 must participate in this Common Core Standards aligned assessment of literacy and math skills.  These online assessments are administered annually in the spring. 
  • Connecticut Alternate Assessment (CTAA) The CTAA for literacy and math is administered to a small group of students as an alternative to the Smarter Balanced Assessment and SATs who have significant cognitive disabilities and who meet the eligibility criteria.  
  • Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Assessment:  This science assessment replaces the CMT and CAPT science tests.  Students in grades 5, 8, and 11 will take it online in spring 2018.  
  • NGSS Alternate:  Students in grades 5, 8, and 11 who meet the eligibility criteria will take this assessment for the first time in spring 2018.
  • PSAT:  In October of junior year, students take this two-hour test as preparation for the SAT and to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship Competition.  
  • SAT: Connecticut SAT day is held in March each year, with makeups in April.  All grade 11 students are required to participate in this assessment of literacy and math skills.
