In today's highly specialized and technical world, the role of science education assumes great importance. We believe science education in the Hamden Public Schools should foster in all students an understanding of, an interest in, and an appreciation of the world in which they live. It should develop scientifically literate individuals who have a substantial knowledge base of scientific facts, concepts and thinking skills, and an understanding of the relationship between science, technology, and society which will help them make responsible decisions.
Finally, we believe science education is a developmental process which begins with the nurturing of a child's natural curiosity and progresses to the laboratory/classroom based acquisition of scientific knowledge and inquiry skills. It should be presented in challenging and interesting ways using a variety of methodologies, and use an inquiry-based approach wherever possible and whenever appropriate.
