Hamden Public Schools District Policies

6114.1 - Fire Emergency

In the event that fire is discovered in any of the school buildings, the Fire Department will be called immediately following the giving of the signal to evacuate the building.

The Principal of each school will hold at least one (1) fire drill each month in which all students and staff members will be required to leave the building.

  1. Students must leave the building in an orderly and rapid manner and teachers are required to check to be sure that no student remains in the building.
  2. Special arrangements for evacuating a handicapped student should be made as soon as such a student is assigned to a school, and the staff member(s) assigned responsibility for evacuating that student from the building must participate with the handicapped student in all fire drills.
  3. Real emergencies often call for alternate exits to be used. Teachers must be prepared to select and direct their classes to these alternate exits in the event the designated escape route is blocked. This demands close control of students.

Principals and teachers will recognize that the essential element in any emergency is prevention of panic. Principals and teachers will afford students such confidence as clarity of direction and supervision can contribute.

The Principal must maintain a log of monthly fire drills.

First Aid-CPR

At least two (2) staff members at each school, not to include the school nurse, will hold current first aid and CPR certification.
