Hamden Public Schools District Policies

5145.43 - Human Dignity

Discrimination prevents individuals from achieving their full human potential Discrimination involves treating persons as members of groups, rather than on the basis of their individual capacities or merits, and it includes any conduct based solely on race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, socio-economic status, physical disability, age or marital status. Historically, discrimination is perpetuated by both individuals and institutions. Public schools, as one of society's most influential institutions, must address to this issue.

The Hamden Public Schools strive to develop each student's fullest potential as a unique human being. To do this requires an awareness of the subtlety and harmfulness of all forms of discrimination. Each Board member, administrator, teacher, staff member and student must understand the nature of discrimination and eliminate wherever it may exist in the Hamden School System.

The Board of Education affirms its intent to provide equal opportunity in all programs, practices and activities regardless of race, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, religion, national origin, socio-economic status, physical disability, age or marital status.

The Superintendent will develop appropriate statements and regulations concerning affirmative action and grievance procedures as required by existing state and federal statutes.
