Feelings of Safety and Security

Dear Hamden Public Schools Community,

Feelings of safety and security, whether at the bank, the grocery store, a theater, or a school, are shaken when we hear of another horrible tragedy as the one that occurred yesterday at Marjory Stoneham Douglas High School in Broward County, Florida.

While we have substantial physical security measures in place, and diligently train students, staff, and security personnel (with help from local and state law enforcement and emergency services personnel) in how to respond to an array of emergencies, vigilance and communication remain the most valuable tools in keeping our community safe. Should you hear or see a behavior that raises concern, we ask that you share it with the police and the school administration. Working together we can build an even safer environment for our students.

As a precaution, and as a reminder of the support that we continuously receive from our local and state police departments, you will see a heightened police presence at all of our schools over the next couple of days. In addition, our District Safety Committee, with representatives from police and fire, administration, Board of Education, clerks and teachers, will continue to meet monthly to review and improve our safety procedures, training programs, and building safety infrastructure.

I invite you to attend the District Safety Committee’s second Community Dinner featuring Connecticut State Trooper and DARE Coordinator, Kate Cummings, who will facilitate a discussion on Internet safety, social media awareness and current trends in Connecticut related to teenage behaviors associated with social media. The evening is free of charge (including dinner). See the next news entry below for more information.

Please keep the Douglas High School community in your thoughts.

                                                                      Jody Ian Goeler, Superintendent

Parent Nominations Are Now Being Accepted for Hamden’s 2018-19 Talented and Gifted (TAG) Program

Has your 4th or 5th grade student demonstrated evidence of superior intellectual, creative or academic language arts ability? If so, he or she may benefit from participation in Hamden’s TAG Program.

Hamden’s TAG program is centered on Language Arts and is for 5th and 6th grade students, with identification being done while students are in 4th and 5th grade. Teachers and/or parents/guardians may nominate children for consideration to participate in the program.

Students who are nominated go through a process that examines student academic Language Arts achievement results, creativity, demonstrated skills on performance tasks and attitudinal measures. This evaluation occurs in late winter and spring. Toward the end of May, parents receive notification of whether or not their child has been accepted into the program.

Students who are accepted begin the program in the fall, leaving their usual 5th or 6th grade classrooms one day per week to attend our TAG Program at Alice Peck School. There, students receive differentiated instruction beyond that being provided in their regular school programs in order to help them realize their intellectual, creative or language arts potential. Students are expected to make up (on their own time) any work they miss at their home schools while participating in TAG activities.

If you think your child may qualify for Hamden’s TAG program, you may nominate him or her for evaluation by completing the Parent/Guardian TAG Program Nomination Form. Forms must be received by February 23, 2018 for consideration.

Winter Weather - Delays, Early Dismissals and School Closings

Winter is here... and sometimes that means that schools need to alter their opening and closing times - or cancel altogether - in the interest of student safety. Superintendent of Schools Jody Goeler has written a letter to parents that explains Hamden's process for making changes to our school schedules due to severe weather in our area.

Mike Belden Awarded the 2017 Chamber Choice Award for Educational Leadership

Congratulations to Hamden Public Schools' Chief Operating Officer, Mike Belden, who was selected by the Hamden Chamber of Commerce to receive the 2017 Chamber Choice Award for Educational Leadership!  Each year, the Chamber honors the contributions and commitment of local businesses, citizens, community advocates, educators and business students.

Mike's work extends far beyond the budget, finances and operations of our district. With every decision he makes, the welfare of children is first and foremost.  Mike always makes an effort to learn about our educational programs and initiatives, and his integration of this knowledge into his work makes him a true educational leader and a great asset to Hamden.

Mike’s mother had a long and successful career as an educator and was a tireless advocate for children. It is clear that Mike has inherited the same passion for excellence in education that his mother promoted, and every aspect of his work reflects these ideals. Although, Mike has the mind of a Chief Operating Officer, he has the heart of an educator. We are so proud of him and thrilled that he is being honored by the Hamden Chamber of Commerce!

Visit the Chamber Choice Awards webpage to see the other 2017 Honorees and to join the celebration gala on November 9, 2017.

Congratulations to Hamden's 2017 Teachers of the Year!

HHS Science Students Visit Quinnipiac Med School

Through a cooperative program between Quinnipiac University School of Health Sciences and Hamden High School, interested HHS science students recently visited the QU cadaver lab. HHS students were shown around the lab by first-year medical students, and allowed to experience some of what med students learn as part of their early training. Hamden students participate in multiple activities and visits through this exciting and worthwhile program, and many gain personal insights related to further education and possible future medical careers.
