Middle school is an in-between time - right in the middle between elementary school and high school. In Hamden, our middle school currently instructs 7th and 8th grade students (although there are plans to transition 6th grade to the middle school in the coming years).
In an effort to best meet the needs of early adolescents, Hamden Middle School uses a "Team" approach. Teaming allows for smaller cohorts of students to work together during the day, providing a way for teachers to get to know their students better and thus better meet their social/emotional and academic needs. This approach also provides the opportunity for multi-disciplinary learning - a great way to make learning more meaningful and engaging.
Hamden Middle School has a one-to-one Chromebook initiative! Students are assigned a chromebook that they use throughout their school day. Technology-enhanced learning is an integral part of many core and elective classes at HMS!
Here's what a schedule might look like for an HMS student:
8:00-8:10 Homeroom - pick up your laptop
10:40-11:26 Social Studies
11:29- 11:52 Lunch
11:55 12:41 World Language
12:44-1:30 Physical Education
2:22-2:29 End of day homeroom
Our Middle School Teachers Love to Teach!
We asked them what they love about teaching - here are a few examples of what they said!
- Mr Tremper, Social Studies Teacher
- Ms Majka, Spanish Teacher
- Ms Kim, Science Teacher
- Ms McCulley, Library Media Specialist
- Ms Coggins, English Teacher
I love teaching because I love that moment when students try something new or challenging or unfamiliar and realize that yes, they can do it. They can be successful and achieve things they did not think was possible. They discover something new about themselves-- maybe they are -- in fact-- readers and writers. Despite what they previously thought.
What I love most about teaching, first and foremost, is the kids. I learn from them every day. Their energy and curiosity inspires and motivates me. Secondly, I love being able to read and share young adult literature with kids. We learn about ourselves and the world from what we read, and it is awesome to be able to share great books with kids.
