Principal's Message

Dear Helen Street School Families,

We wrapped up a wonderful school year!!  We got the chance to graduate our sixth-graders and Kindergarteners in in-person celebrations.  Field trips started back up and the staff won the Staff vs. 6th Grade Kickball Trophy!  Most importantly, Helen Street School students rose to the challenges of the school year.  The academic achievement and progress in each student have been nothing short of remarkable!  Please continue to engage your children in math and reading.  Visiting the Public Library, using familiar school programs such as DreamBox, Lexia & Epic, doing puzzles, and helping with exploring are some ways to keep your child’s mind wondering and seeking new knowledge.

We want to congratulate Ms. Hemperly (Grade 1 Teacher) as Hamden’s Teacher-of-the-Year.  We wish her all the best as she is now a candidate for Connecticut’s Teacher-of-the-Year!  Likewise, we appreciate each of our Helen Street School Staff Members.  Our goals are your child’s well-being, providing the tools for success and facilitating academic progress!

As I close this Principal’s Message, I want to express my gratitude for being a part of your child’s education and getting to know the families of the Helen Street Community during my 12 years as the Principal of Helen Street School.  As I look forward to a retirement in which I will spend time with my grandchildren and trying to find a hobby, I will look backward often and fondly to my days in this school and town.

To help you stay aware of what’s going on in the classroom, the school, and the school district please continue to visit the school website, the district website, your child’s classroom DOJO, and the Google Classroom or other ways we try to communicate with you and keep you informed.  And, of course, you can contact the school office at 203-407-2030.

Finally, now is a great time to consider being a part of the PTA and attending monthly meetings.  The PTA is a great way to get “plugged into what’s happening”, have input into our school, and being a great community-minded role model for your children.  Please watch for the updated monthly meetings schedule.  One immediate way to support the PTA is by shopping through AmazonSMILE.  This is Amazon’s way of supporting organizations and offers ALL THE SAME ON-LINE SHOPPING as Amazon.  Select Helen Street PTA as your preferred charity/organization.    https://smile.amazon.com/
