Registration FAQ
1. I just moved into Hamden, how do I register my child/ren?
Hamden Public Schools now offers online registration. Complete the forms on our online portal:

2. What do I need to enroll my child in school?
- Documents that will verify the age and residency of the child. Acceptable documentation for proof of age includes but is not limited to, the child’s birth certificate.
- Proof of residency documents in the name of the parent, legal guardian or person having care and/or control of the school-aged child that verifies that the child is a resident of Hamden. Please feel free to react account numbers, social security numbers and amounts.
- In accordance with Connecticut State law, children MUST have up-to-date physical examinations and immunization records. Before school starts, completed Physical Health and Immunization Records can be delivered to your child's school. Please note: students will not be allowed to attend school if they do not meet their grade level health requirements.
- All available transcripts and other educational records if the child is transferring from another school or district.
3. My child/ren and I don't own a home but live with a Hamden resident. How do I register my child/ren?
Any parent/guardian residing in Hamden who does not own their own home or have a lease in their name must complete a Residential Status Report Application at our Central Office (60 Putnam Avenue). Please call the Residency Office at 203-407-2243 to make an appointment to complete this application.
3. Who can register child/ren for school?
The parent, legal guardian or person having care and/or control of school-aged child/ren who resides within the City of Hamden can register children into Hamden Public Schools.
4. Can I pick which school my child attends?
Students will attend school in designated attendance areas as established by the Board of Education unless otherwise assigned by the Superintendent of Schools in accordance with the student placement policies of the Board of Education (Policy 5117).
5. If I move between neighborhoods in Hamden, can I keep my student enrolled in their current school?
When a student's family moves from one elementary school area to another or out of Hamden during the school year, and the parents want the student to remain in the school for the balance of the school year:
The Principal will tell the parent to make the request by letter to the Superintendent and stipulate in this letter that he or she will guarantee to provide transportation for the student while living outside the district.
NOTE: The above applies only after February 1 except in the case of kindergartners, sixth graders, eighth graders, and twelfth graders who may apply at any time during the school year for this permission (Policy 5118).
6. If I move, how do I change my child’s address?
You may contact the main office of your child’s school and complete an address change. In order to change the address of a child, proof of residency documents must be provided which include a current utility bill (electricity, home phone, gas, or cable bill), a rental lease agreement or mortgage papers in the name of the parent, legal guardian or person having care and/or control of the school-aged child that verifies that the child is a resident of Hamden.
7. Can a child use two addresses or a P.O Box for registration?
No, a child can be registered using only one Hamden address and P.O. Boxes may not be used to register a child.
8. How old does my child have to be for Pre-kindergarten and Kindergarten registration?
- Children turning 5 on or before September 1st of a current school year are eligible for Kindergarten.
- Children turning 4 on or before September 1st of a current school year are eligible for Pre-K 4.
- Children turning 3 on or before September 1st of a current school year are eligible for Pre-K 3 .
