P.R.I.D.E. Program

Dear Parents/Guardians:

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) strive to use a system to understand what maintains an individual’s challenging behavior. Students’ inappropriate behaviors are difficult to change because they are functional; they serve a purpose for the child. These behaviors are supported by reinforcement in the environment.  The positive behavior support process involves goal identification, information gathering, hypothesis development, support plan design, implementation and monitoring.

A significant part of our students’ academic success correlates directly to the exemplary behavior that they exhibit. To ensure a safe and orderly educational environment conducive to student learning, faculty and staff members are working collaboratively in the best interest of children, recognizing and identifying appropriate behavior. To create this environment, we have adopted a positive behavior support program that we affectionately call “Dunbar Jaguar P.R.I.D.E.

P.R.I.D.E. stands for Positive, Respectful/Responsible, In Control, Dedicated and Empathetic.  Please help us to reinforce the positive behaviors listed both at home and at school. Our goal is for all students to know what “P.R.I.D.E” behavior looks like.

During the first few weeks of school, students will receive instruction concerning these valuable behavior traits and how to earn “P.R.I.D.E.” cards for exhibiting appropriate behaviors.  Students who receive “P.R.I.D.E.” cards will receive special opportunities to celebrate, including incentives, activity opportunities, and school-wide recognition on the morning announcements.

Through the use of effective behavior management at a school wide level, PBIS programs offer an effective method to reduce negative school behaviors.

Thank you for all that you do to promote positive student conduct.

Sincerely,

Laura M. Rodríguez
