Heat-At-Home-Meals Available April 1, Weekend Meals Start April 3

Chicken nuggets, pizza, mac and cheese... how does that sound?  Starting April 1, Hamden is pleased to add heat-at-home foods to our take-away meal program. Our breakfast and lunch program will include new fully-cooked food options that can be heated at home. Sandwiches are yummy - but variety is the spice of life!

Fresh fruit and veggies are also included in the food options available.

The take-away meals are available at our five food distribution locations: Church Street School, Ridge Hill School, Hamden Middle School, Hamden High School, and the Keefe Center. Meals are available Monday-Friday, from 9:00-12:00 for any child 18 years of age or younger.

As you know, all Hamden Public Schools are closed due to the Coronavirus. Although essential staff may be in our buildings, our schools and central office are currently closed to the public.

Related to school meals, breakfast and lunch are available Monday - Friday, from 9:00-12:00 each morning at Hamden High, Hamden Middle and Church Street Schools.  Any child 18 years and younger is eligible for these meals, which can be picked up by students or parents/guardians.

Guess who started off her week by visiting Helen Street 2nd graders on Monday, March 2?  Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro!  What a treat to have Congresswoman DeLauro explain about our government and how she represents over 750,000 of us in Connecticut!  

While Congresswoman DeLauro was at Helen Street (her cousins went to Helen Street School, by the way!), she read to us a book called "Grace Goes to Washington." She tied the book into the transition from Black History month in February to Woman's History month in March.  This book is an interesting story about a girl named Grace who applies to her own school what she has learned about the US's three branches of government. Just before she left, Congresswoman DeLauro gave Mr. Lorenzo the book (which she inscribed) to add to our Helen Street media center collection.  Now all the children in our school can enjoy it!

Thank you Congresswoman DeLauro! You are a wonderful teacher and welcome to visit us anytime!  Oh yeah, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!!  (We hope you like the card we made for you!)

Staying Healthy

There's a lot of scary information in the news lately about Coronavirus. (View the CDC's FactSheet on Coronovirus)  The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) and local health officials remind us that the best way to stay healthy is to practice basic healthy behaviors. These behaviors help prevent the spread of any illness, including flu or Coronavirus. 

QVHD (Quinnipiac Valley Health District) has asked that we share the following information and recommendations:

To help avoid coming into contact with infectious diseases or spreading them to others, the CDC recommends everyday preventive actions including these steps:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Facemasks are not generally recommended.  Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
    • CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.
    • Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The use of facemasks is also crucial for health workers and people taking care of someone in close settings.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.

As was distributed via a "robo call" to all HPS families, QVHD also recommends several home preparedness steps. QVHD and the CDC state that it's important for everyone to maintain a 3-day stockpile of essential items at home - regardless of emerging situations. These would come into play for any emergency - including hurricanes or snowstorms. You know the drill - buy milk and bread, extra batteries for flashlights, etc. In the event that the Coronavirus reaches our area, your won't need extra batteries for the flashlight, but it is possible that people will be asked to stay home for a period of about two weeks. For this reason, QVHD recommends that people be ready to store non-perishable foods and other essentials (like pet food, prescriptions, diapers) that could last for up to two weeks. Please note that this is not currently the recommendation - but could be recommended should the situation change.

So to summarize: Stay home if you are sick. Stay away from sick people. Clean frequently touched objects.  Wash your hands frequently and don't touch your eyes, nose and mouth. And finally - check for updated information on the CDC or QVHD Coronavirus Webpages.  

Technology Update - Connected!

We are happy to report that Internet access has been restored at all of our schools!  Staff and student devices can now connect to Web-based resources (like Google Drive) and content-related Websites. Staff email has also been restored.

This has been a long process, but our Network will be stronger than ever as a result.  We are deeply appreciative of the patience of our parents, students and staff, who have now learned a new skill: How to live without much technology.  :-)
