The mission of the English Learner Program in Hamden Public Schools is to promote and support the linguistic and academic language learning so that all students can succeed in a global environment.
Our vision is to ensure that all English Learners are able to achieve high levels of performance given relevant instruction, continuity and collaboration with the entire staff. We will ensure equity while maintaining their cultural and linguistic identity.
"Language is not a genetic gift, it is a social gift. Learning a new language is becoming a member of the club- the community of speakers of that language." - Frank Smith
"Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same things, but learning another way to think about things." - Flora Lewis
- EL Summer School Starts 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
2017 Summer Enrichment Program for English Learners
English Language Learners in grades K-12 can participate in our new summer school program. Hamden Public Schools' EL Department will offer summer learning opportunities for EL students. Acceptance letters were sent to those who qualified for the program.
Our EL Specialists Ms. Mauro and Mr. Sousa will be working with students around a theme-based curriculum intended to build proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. In an effort to maximize instructional time and provide a classroom climate conducive to learning, we maintain very high expectations for students to follow classroom procedures and display appropriate behavior. Summer school offers time of reflection, growth, and preparation for the upcoming year. We are looking forward to sharing these experiences with your child.
