Parents Supporting Educational Excellence (Date Extended!)
Parent SEE is a parent leadership training program that will be starting soon in Hamden and open to all parents. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to engage in dialogue with other Hamden parents and practice skills needed to promote positive change for their child's and other children’s education. It’s a FREE course that will take place on Tuesday nights from 5 – 8:30 starting in March. Dinner and child care are provided and parents who complete the program will earn a store gift card. If interested, speak with your child’s school principal or contact the program coordinator, Brenda Shuler at firstname.lastname@example.org or (203) 871-7872.
Wintergreen Lottery Application Now Available
Wintergreen Interdistrict Magnet School (WIMS) is a grades K-8 magnet school located in Hamden and overseen by ACES. Children living in Hamden are eligible to attend WIMS instead of their "home" schools. Because space is limited at WIMS, Hamden holds a lottery to determine which students will be offered admission at each grade level. If you are interested in your child attending WIMS beginning in Fall 2016, you must complete the 2016 WIMS Application. (Applications are also available at elementary school offices.) Completed applications must be returned to Hamden Public School's Central Office (60 Putnam Avenue) by 4:00 PM on Thursday, February 11, 2016. (Note that the majority of placements are at the kindergarten level, however, a small number of openings at other grade levels will also be made. Children must be 5 years old by December 31, 2016 in order to be considered for admission to the kindergarten class.) Questions? Please contact Wendy Ocone at 203-407-2202.
HHS Campaign Asks Residents to "Pledge to Pledge"
Students in Hamden High School's DECA program believe that patriotism plays a crucial role in our Nation's success and pride, and feel it is their mission to stress the importance of honoring our nation and our armed service members who bravely serve it. Their new campaign, "Pledge to Pledge," was created to encourage students and adults to stand up for and say the Pledge of Allegiance.
HHS DECA is encouraging people of all ages across the country to support this campaign by asking people to send a photograph of themselves saying "I Pledge to Pledge" with their right hands over their hearts. Send your photo image to one of their social media platforms: Twitter or Instagram @IpledgetoPledge. In addition to raising the level of respect for the United States and the American Flag, the campaign also is raising funds for the Wounded Warriors Project. You can visit the Pledge to Pledge website at http://www.pledgetopledge.org for more on this meaningful student project.
